The history of Slovenes in Croatia
In their history of living in the territory of the Republic of Croatia, the Slovenes have always been a constitutional people. Because of the disintegration of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991 and the creation of the democratic countries of Slovenia and Croatia, Slovenes in Croatia became an ethnic minority for the first time.
After both countries had become independent, there was a strong need for associating, so on January 1st, 1992, the Association of Slovene Societies with headquarters in Rijeka was founded. Currently, the headquarters is in Zagreb. The Slovene ethnic minority has all minority rights under the Croatian Constitution.
In spite of good protection and rights that had been guaranteed in Croatia, Slovenes have been decreasing in number year after year. Regardless of the open issues between the two countries, Slovenes in Croatia are on very good terms with their mother county, as well as Croatia.
